| Summary: | One of the most exquisite representations of Islamic art, which has a unique place among the Moslems, is the calligraphy of the Holy Quran. Due to the divinity of the Holy Quran, Moslem calligraphers have always made their best endeavor to consider not only the aesthetic aspects of their works, but also to embellish them as beautifully as possible. Thanks to the special place of calligraphy among the Moslems, all those artists dealing with calligra-phy and embellishment were highly respected. One of such artists, living in Timurid period, is Khwaja Shahab-o-Din Abdollah Morvarid who succeeded to inscribe the Holy Quran attractively. Although a number of his works have been examined in terms of scientific dimensions, his artistic works, that is, the calligraphic works of the Holy Quran, have been scantily studied. The present study aimed to introduce the calligraphic works of Khwaja Abdollah Mor-varid. This study is descriptive in nature and the data were collected based on library sources and historical documents. It seems that the interest of Moslem calligraphers in their art is deeply rooted in their contemplation over the Di-vine Book, the Holy Quran. The examination of Khwaja Abdollah Morvarid's works revealed that, in addition to his royal positions and occupations, his artistic mastery is quite considerable the culmination of which can be seen in calligraphy of the Holy Quran as well as in Arabic-Persian prayers. |
