Summary: | In this research we study migration from Crete to Dardanelles (Çanakkale) and the experience of the population exchange in the turn of the 20th century and in 1923. Grounded to the oral history interviews made in Çanakkale related to the migration experiences, we have discussed the reasons and the social, economic and cultural effects of migration from Crete and population exchange. Migrations from Crete and the Aegean islands started in the last part of the 19th century and after the Treaty of Lausanne in 1923 the final legal frame was formed and large number of were forced to move from Greece to Turkey and vice versa. In this study we have tried to find out and understand the personal or familial experiences of people who moved to Çanakkale from Crete during that period using the oral history method, face to face interviews and recorded narratives concerning family histories. In their narratives we have tried to see the way they remember and interperate the bitter experience of migration. |
