description INTRODUCTION: In this study, we have compared the reliability and accuracy of catheter and sack urine culture in 229 children admitted with suspects and complaints of urinary tract infection. METHODS: The study was held in Yuzuncu Yil University Pediatrics Outpatient Department. Whole urine examination and microscopic examination of urine sediments were done by Biochemistry department. Both cateheter and sack cultere were taken from all cases and cultured in same manner. The results were compared. RESULTS: Urine cultures resulted as positive in 181 samples taken via sack and 48 samples of them were accepted as contamination. The 181 cases of positive sack urine cultured had 58 positive culture of catheter urine, and 123 ones of them no. Contamination cases of sack cultured had 5 positive catheter culture. False positive rate was detected as 68% in sack culture and therefore sensitivity of this method has been calculated as 32%. When we compared boys and girls acoording to sack urine culture no significancy has been detected. In this study we have detected that the contamination rate was higher in girls than boys. We have found a significant positive correlation between positive urine culture and nitrate, hematuria, pyuria in urine examination. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we have found that perineal sack urine culture method has a high contamination rate since it is not a reliable method and therefore urinary bladder catheterization or suprapubic aspiration is more reliable to diagnosis of urinary tract infection in children.
