description In this paper, the Author analyses the reasons why the Christian roots of values of the Member States is at the base of democratic Europe. The hope of a united Europe can be identified in Chris- tian culture, which is conditio sine qua non of a new concept of common European citizenship. The condition to gain a ‘universal citizenship’ relies on the ‘civil religion’, which represents the transcendent human rights and values of a new political society based on peace, justice, solidarity and respect.
