Summary: | Sarab plain is one of the fertile plains of East Azarbayjan, NW Iran, where inhabitant’s economy is based on agriculture and ranch. Here, farmers exploit groundwater as supplement of surface water to irrigate their fields due to dominance of arid conditions and low precipitation. This study aimed to achieve the accurate method for estimating the spatial variations of groundwater level by comparison the different interpolation methods over the plain. Data include the sample data collected from 50 wells and interpolation methods include Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Radial Basis Functions (RBF) and Kriging. The methods were compared in terms of accuracy and efficiency by cross validation method, mean bias error (MBE), root mean square error (RMSE) and square of correlation coefficient (R2) between estimate and observed rates. Finally, the results showed that Kriging method (Rational Quadratic model) was the most efficient and accurate model among tested models for estimation of the groundwater level in the study area, having lowest estimation error (RMSE= 9/79) and highest square of the correlation coefficient between estimate and observed rates (R2= 0/31). So, Kriging method was proposed as optimal method for zoning the groundwater level over the area. This fact can related to considering the spatial distribution and structure of data by Kriging method. According to the zoning maps, the groundwater level in southern section is higher than other sections over the plain. So, it must be more attention to the southern section regarding the optimal management of the groundwater resources. |
