Description
Summary:Organic overloading risk in primary facultative pond was investigated considering empiric design models. A general risk evaluation model was used in a case study, applied to a full scale primary facultative pond in Fortaleza, Ceará (3o 46’ 43”south; 38o 30’ 27” west, 11.0 m a.s.l). Three risk evaluation methods were applied: Monte Carlo simulation, PEM and MFOSM. Mean overloading risk varied from 2.21 to 16.93%, considering the mean temperature of coldest month in the year. Using mean from monthly lowest temperature the risk was higher (between 2.51 and 28.11%). For a maximum surface loading of 350 kg DBO/ha.day the mean risk was around 10%. In areas with climatic characteristics similar to those found in Fortaleza, it is advisable to adopt the limit loading. The equation suggested by MARA (1987) is more conservative, with lower risk due to the smaller ?s. Attention must be paid to the variations of BOD concentration and of fl ow rate.
