Summary: | Founded in 1371, two years after the end of Pisan domination, the Magistrato dei Segretari was the institution responsible throughout the modern age for guaranteeing peace and security in the Republic of Lucca, operating as a secret service at the behest of the State’s political police and inquisition. Its purview embraced all the variegated aspects of local society: the Magistrato thus oversaw the large political issues but also dealt with public order, in some cases even intervening in the most intimate aspects of the day-to-day private conduct of each individual. To effectively pursue its expanding surveillance activity, between the 16th and 18th centuries the Magistrato compiled fourteen volumes of lists the upkeep of which, in addition to serving practical administrative purposes, betrayed a political will to vindicate, legitimate and assure historical continuity. |
