description Musketeers (or strelets) constituted one of the social groups in servicemen population in Russia in the 17th century. In the southern borderland, they were located in fortified cities. The officials who ran the musketeers are not well known to the researchers. Strelets were commanded by heads appointed from Moscow. The heads supervised the musketeers during the defense of the fortress, distributed official assignments, and were responsible for the implementation of various tasks. When appointing the head, service merits were considered: wounds, captivity, close relatives’ death in the battles. The appointment was seen as a reward for a nobleman. Staying at this role allowed them to improve their material situation. The opinion of the musketeers influenced the commander’s length of stay in the position. One of the main qualities of the strelets’ heads was peaceful relations with subordinates. Despite the fact that military danger for the cities of the southern borderland in the 17th century changed, the role of the musketeer heads in the governance structure remained the same. Until the middle of the century, the Black-earth region was directly attacked by the Polish, Lithuanians, Crimean and Nogai Tatars. During the Russian-Polish War, the Russian-Turkish War, the Crimean and Azov campaigns, the cities of the Belgorod Regiment were in the rear. In this regard, the nature of the musketeer commanders’ service was changing. In the first half of the 17th century, heads could command servicemen in battles with the enemy. In the second half of the century, their service acquired more peaceful traits.
