Description
Summary:In the second unpublished volume of La Philosophie de l’Algèbre, Jules Vuillemin gave an unexpected and suggestive reading of Richard Dedekind’s works. We tried to understand the results of this reading by using Vuillemin’s own ideas and tools. To us, these results seemed to question the relations between history of science and philosophy of science. Our paper proposes a diptych to present the questions we wanted to ask to Vuillemin’s text. Firstly, we analyze how Vuillemin continued and deepened Jean Cavaillès’ work. Secondly, we aimed to emphasize the distance Vuillemin set between the history of mathematics and his interpretation of the conceptual parentage which he considered essentially distinct from historical relations.
