Summary:Memory of Henryk Zdzisław Jurkowski (1927–2016), a puppet theatre historian, theorist and critic, pedagogue, dramatist, editor, and long-time Polish representative in UNIMA (Union Internationale de la Marionnette), officer of the Union’s governing bodies (i.e. member of the Presidium, later renamed as Executive Committee, 1959–1992; Secretary General, 1972–1980; Vice-President, 1980–1984; President, 1984–1992), the President of POLUNIMA (2007–2011). He authored hundreds of articles, essays, reviews and dozens of books published in more than dozen languages regarding the history and theory of puppet theatre and puppetry esthetic, including his three-volume Dzieje teatru lalek (‘A History of Puppet Theatre,’ PIW: Warszawa, 1970, 1976, 1984; revised 2nd edition in two volumes—Lublin, 2012), Aspects of Puppet Theatre. A collection of essays (Puppet Centre Trust: London, 1988), Ecrivains et marionnettes. Quatre siècles de la literature dramatique en Europe (Editions Institut Internationale de la Marionnette: Charleville-Mézières, 1991), the two-volume History of European Puppetry (The Edwin Mellen Press: Lewiston, NY, 1996 & 1998) and Metamorphoses. La marionette au XXe siècle (Institut Internationale de la Marionnette: Charleville-Mézières, 2000).
