Summary:The study investigated the awareness and adoption of improved agricultural technologies disseminated through the radio, the relationship between personal factors and adoption as well as the problems limiting effective utilization of radio farm messages by farmers in Umuahia zone of Abia State, Nigeria. Eighty completed interview schedules from farmers were analysed using percentages, ranking and multiple regression analysis. It was found that 50% or more of the respondents are aware of eight out of 11 improved agricultural technologies transmitted through the radio farm broadcast. Only four of the 11 improved technologies are adopted by 40% or more of the sampled farmers. The major factors influencing adoption of improved agricultural technologies are age, farming experience and household size. Age and household size are positively related to adoption while farming experience is negatively associated with adoption of innovations. In contrast, no significant relationship is found to exist between adoption and level of formal education of the farmers. Epileptic electric power supply and inability to ask relevant questions and get the feedback from the radio farm programme presenter are the most pressing problems militating against effective utilization of radio farm messages by farmers.
