Summary:Introduction Performance based financing is a policy shift from the traditional health care financing methods. It is designed to answer the supposed challenges hindering effective delivery of health care services to achieve maximum maternal and child health outcome. This study was aimed at exposing the contextual issues surrounding the implementation of PBF in Nigeria based on the originally adopted plan and how these changes affected the intended outcome of the project with a view to making recommendations on how best PBF can be implemented in Nigeria.
