description | Abstract This PowerPoint presentation with narration is intended for dental students and practicing dentists, and covers the relevance and basic concepts of communication and interpersonal skills as they apply to general dentistry. In 2008, American Dental Education Association published “Competencies for the New General Dentist” that included Competency 3: Communication and Interpersonal Skills. This competency calls on students and dentists to: apply appropriate interpersonal and communication skills; apply psychosocial and behavioral principles in patient-centered health care; and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse populations. This presentation highlights the benefits of increased communication competency in regards to the dentist-patient relationship, and discusses the principles and barriers to effective verbal and nonverbal communication. It is pertinent to faculty as they review and reconsider the role of communication and interpersonal skills in improving diagnostic accuracy, building rapport and trust, and communicating with diverse patient populations. It is beneficial for faculty in that it may raise awareness of the need for them to incorporate techniques and examples of effective ways to communicate with patients into their courses. This presentation raises the cognitive awareness of end-users while they interact with patients within the clinic or practice. |
