description The women didn’t keep out of the first carlist war, but they were also affected by it. Many of them became victims of the struggle, when they were ejected of their towns, maltreated, raped, kidnapped or killed, usually by the enemies of their husbands or relatives, that fought in that conflict. At the same time, other women took an active part in the war, encouraging the soldiers, providing supplies, practising as spies or even fighting. In these cases they used to support the side in which their husbands or relatives were, with a part that almost always was subordinated to the men.
