description Although the European Union is considered the largest integration project, disparities at national and regional level existed since the advent of the European model and grew with the new waves of enlargement of the countries from Central and Eastern Europe in 2004 and 2007. This paper is aimed at studying the problematic disparities between NUTS 2 regions of the EU. These imbalances are highlighted through a cluster analysis which aims to identify clusters of regions with similar characteristics in terms of various socio-economic indicators. Results are illustrated using GIS software.
