| Summary: | A new emerging speciality, medicine of sleep disorders, deals with a state and not with an organ. Its inception is due to epidemiological and morbidity studies with emphasize the high prevalence and deleterious effects of insomnias, wake disorders or hypersomnias, circadian rhythm sleep disorders and to a lesser degree parasomnias. It also considers disorders mainly arising from sleep, including the sleep apnea syndrome and the upper airway resistance syndrome. Finally, it uses sleep as a special condition to research disorders such as epilepsies or depressions. |
