description Cultural identity of soviet person based on Witold Olszewski’s We are bulding a canal This paper is about a category of cultural identity in a forgotten book from the mainstream of totalitarism after the Second World War. The book of study We are building a canal by Witold Olszewski/Stanisław Kępiński aimed to characterise a Soviet man on the basis of the course of narrative, taking into account the difference in cultural programming between the Poles and the Russians. Cultural identity of Russians was re-defined after 1917 and changed the scope of its value. From a Soviet Union resident’s point of view, Russia is in every respect a large country. At the same time, though, the state apparatus is putting pressure on each individual, tightening the world around them and diminishing it, which means they do not feel free living in its frames. A Soviet individual is threatened and manipulated by propaganda. He is made to speak a new variety of his native language, which is also one of the tools of oppression imposed by the new government. The revolution contributes to very specific dietary habits and strange sexual behaviour. Kępiński’s Bezgołosow does not fully identify himself with the revolution and its symbolism, he does not understand its terms.
