description | Following the trend of most countries, commuting has increased in Brazil for various motives, with work and study reasons standing out. In addition, this contemporary population displacement has reached inland areas of Brazil, with flows going beyond main metropolitan regions of the country. Given this context, the purpose of this study is to analyze and compare the characteristics of commuting among nine municipalities in the Metropolitan Region of Cariri (RM Cariri), located in the inland area of the State of Ceará. The microdata from the 2010 Demographic Census is the main source of information. The main results reveal that in RM Cariri, the municipalities of Crato, Juazeiro do Norte and Barbalha, known as the CRAJUBAR triangle, are responsible for the largest daily commuting volumes in the metropolitan space. Juazeiro do Norte and Barbalha receive more commuters/people for work reasons, trend related to the business and economic undertakings present in these municipalities. In turn, Crato stands out in its daily attractiveness for study reason, which supplants the work reason. This scenario confirms its historical vocation as a “breeding ground” for education and culture in southern Ceará. With respect to the other six municipalities that make up the RM Cariri, they are losers of daily population heading to the conurbation of CRAJUBAR triangle, which concentrate infrastructure, health, leisure, study and job opportunities in the metropolis. |
