description | This article explores the complex and ever-evolving relationship between Tunisia and its Mediterranean heritage through the lens of tourism promotion. It scrutinizes a dual promotional narrative. One is explicit, outward-oriented, aimed at strengthening geopolitical ties with Europe, and meeting the expectations of Western tourists. The other, more subtle, focuses on historical, political, and sociocultural considerations. After briefly surveying the colonial exploitation of the Roman heritage, the article delves into the postcolonial era, where Habib Bourguiba's regime used tourism as a lever for modernization and rapprochement with Europe, thus redefining Tunisia's geopolitical position. Ben Ali's regime emphasized the "reconciliation" between the past and the present, giving increased importance to Carthage. The post-revolutionary era subtly shifts towards the promotion of the country's Punic heritage. This article sheds light on the interplay between Tunisia's Mediterranean position, tourism, and its ancient heritages in the face of Mediterranean geopolitical challenges. |
