Description
Summary:Objective: To know the perception of deceased donors’ relatives about consent to organ donation and the factors that influence the decision to donate. Methods: Exploratory and descriptive research with a qualitative approach. We interviewed seven relatives of organ donors, notified by the Organ Procurement Organization of Petrolina-PE. The interviews occurred between January and February 2018, through a semi-structured questionnaire, were recorded and transcribed in full, and subjected to thematic content analysis. Results: Family members’ perceptions of donation were tied to feelings of sadness and joy. The factors related to the consent process were understanding of the death of the loved one; a decision shared by the family; care provided by health professionals to the family and the donor, and knowledge of the relative’s willingness to donate. Final considerations: The health professionals’ understanding of the decision-making process can support more qualified assistance.
