As regional policy considerations have frequently had a role to play in decisions on the creation of new universities, studies have also been carried out for a number of university locations in Germany to investigate the impacts of university spending on regional economies. In terms of methodology, however, these studies differ significantly in a number of areas. The present contribution describes methodological problems associated with attempts to quantify regional effects of university spending, illustrated by reference to Kassel. In considering differences in method — and notwithstanding the variety of approaches adopted — analysis of these studies reveals that they all record regional effects of university spending of a similar order of magnitude, with just a few isolated cases of exceptions to the pattern.
