Investıgatıon of Topical Anesthetic Drop's Effects On Ocular Biometry Measurements.

Aim: Investigation of the efffects of using topical anesthetic on axial length (AL), average keratometry (AK), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), intraocular lens power (IOLP).Patient and methods: 15 female and 15 male emetrop patients , applied to our our polyclinic for...

description Aim: Investigation of the efffects of using topical anesthetic on axial length (AL), average keratometry (AK), central corneal thickness (CCT), anterior chamber depth (ACD), intraocular lens power (IOLP).Patient and methods: 15 female and 15 male emetrop patients , applied to our our polyclinic for routine eye examination, who don’t have any ocular or systemic disease, don’t use medication related to ocular or systemic diseases. The cases were between between 18-26 years old and avarage age was  22,80±2,29 years. 30 eyes of those 15 people were examined. The right eyes were taken as the study group while left eyes were taken as the  control group. Study group (right eyes) was separated in to 3 groups with regard to time intervals of measurements as; before topical anesthetic (0.5 % proparacaine hydrochloride, Alcaine, Alcon), after 20 seconds and after 2 minutes. No anesthetic were applied to control group (left eyes) although all the measurements were made at the same time intervals. All measurements were made with optical biometry device (ALScan, Nidek, Japan). Results: There was no change in all the measurements of  the control group's  before drop, after 20 sec and after 2 mins (p>0.05) intervals. There wasn’t any significant difference in both study group's and control group's AL, AK, ACD and IOLP measurements between their own time intervals(p>0.05). However CCT measurements of after 20 sec were significantly higher than both before drop and after 2 minutes' intervals, as well as compared to control group's measurements (p<0.05). Although no significant difference was observed between before drop, after 2 mins and control group (p>0.05). Conclusion: In this study, we observed that anesthetic drop doesn’t have an effect on AL, AK, ACD and IOLP measurements. However we suggest taking CCT measurement which is made 20 sec after the drop into consideration just because it was significantly different from other groups, especially when examining the intraocular pressure.
