description | The author discusses the history of Jan Ciepliński’s ballet company, highlighting the links between the artist’s activities and his “restless, entrepreneurial personality.” She emphasizes that his off-stage work began quite early on, with the establishment (with Halina Szmolcówna and Zygmunt Szubiakiewicz) of the ballet section of the Association of Polish Stage Artists at Warsaw’s Teatr Wielki [Grand Theatre] in 1919; he was also actively committed to raising the level of general education for dancers. The author analyses the artistic and infrastructural aspects of the work of Ciepliński’s group, which was successively based in Katowice, Poznań, and Vilnius, as well as touring actively (e.g., in Silesia, Vienna, Czechoslovakia, and Warsaw). She underscores the importance of Ciepliński’s experience from his ballet school, Teatr Wielki, and Anna Pavlova’s ballet, as well as his inspiration from Ballets Russes. She cites numerous and divided opinions regarding his choreographic inventiveness. She briefly presents the story of the Warsaw Ballet (1937) – Ciepliński’s short-lived return to the idea of an running an independent dance company. The article opens a series in which the author discusses selected interwar ensembles (see Pamiętnik Teatralny 3/4, 1996, and 3/4, 1998). |
