The target audience is third-year medical students. Methods Included in this resource are an instructor guide, SP guide, learner instructions, assessment form, and postencounter activities with reference resources and correct responses. Student performance is evaluated in two ways: through SP evaluation and through postencounter activities. The SP grades the student by using Yes and No checkboxes on an SP evaluation form. The student is assigned a percentage grade for each of the graded cases; for example, 21 Yes responses out of 30 possible would give 70%. Students are also assigned a percentage for postencounter activity items correctly completed. Results This resource has been used successfully with more than 150 students in our pediatric clerkship. Typical student scores on the standardized patient evaluation checklist range from 70% to 100%. Discussion Based on past student performance, both clerkship directors and Office of Clinical Skills staff have begun to emphasize certain aspects of the SP encounter during the debriefing session that follows the practice Clinical Skill Exam (CSE). The aim is not only to improve student performance on later graded cases but also to help prepare students for the expectations of the Step 2 CSE. Specifically, discussion points have included the importance of using open ended questions, addressing any patient displays of emotion or unusual affect, and ensuring that the patient or parent is comfortable with and will be able to comply with the treatment plan.
