Description
Summary:Light pollution is currently a less acknowledged, but important environmental problem and it covers all illumination of space from an artificial light source. This article presents information and knowledge on light pollution and its negative impact on biotic components in the environment. Global examples of this pollution are included in our analysis of light pollution in Slovakia. Dark-sky areas and parks provide a healthy contrast to light pollution environments, because in times of extreme, and in many cases unnecessary, environmental illumination by artificial lighting, dark sky areas and parks are an invaluable rarity for proper nature biorhythms. This includes all nature bio-elements, including man. Dark sky areas and parks are a desirable priority for specific human occupations, and especially for scientific activities which undoubtedly include astronomy and biology. This article presents the dark sky areas and parks on Slovak territory which have all the attributes required to meet the highest standards of dark sky territories. Herein, we provide the results of the public opinion poll on light pollution from a sample of respondents who assessed the awareness level of Slovak citizens on light pollution issues.
