Summary: | The aim of the present paper is to analyze the novel A star called Henry, written by the Irish author Roddy Doyle. The analysis sets out to investigate in which ways a national identity manifests itself within the historical and social context that envelops the protagonist of the narrative throughout his childhood and youth. The political and social crisis that Ireland goes through are reflected in the identity crisis of the main character himself. During the national movement and the following civil war, which resulted in the independence of the Republic of Ireland, the character is slowly awaken to the true meaning of belonging to a nation. All the ensuing unfoldment of such awakening lead Henry to question his own identity not only as a subject but also as an Irish citizen. The applied methodology is based mainly in theoretical texts regarding the identity issue by Zygmunt Bauman (2005) and Stuart Hall (2006) and the writings concerning the spawn of a national identity by Benedict Anderson (2008). |
