description This article examines a number of problems met by social scientists who work for public bodies, from the example of Vincent Viet’s hybrid status, as both a historian and a research assistant at the DREES-MiRe, a research body within the French Department of Health. Research bodies such as the DREES were set up, both to produce knowledge on the basis of which public policy is made, and to assess this policy. As such, they constitute a privileged vantage point for observing the relationship between research and expertise. Based on an insider’s experience, this article examines the consequences of the decline of interest in research programmes – to the benefit of large-scale statistical surveys requested by Ministers and management – within a major Department’s research body.
