| description | In order to make digital images available in a standardized manner, independent
from the collection to which they belong, the community of the International
Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) is developing several application
programming interfaces (APIs) and implementing them in open source
software. As an accompanying effect, a change in dealing with digitized images can be
observed. They are increasingly not only understood as a representation of the
›original‹ anymore, but also as a sequence of coded information. To focus on
these different approaches in the understanding of digital imagery is just as
important as explaining the interfaces, the software and the functionality. The
reflection on the technical approach should set a basis for discussions that
extend beyond the IT community. An insight on how cultural heritage
institutions react to these processes in their provisioning is complementing
those thoughts. The key question is, whether the interaction between use and
provision can change the way we work with images. |
