description This article focuses on the fantasy of mineralization and its function in Charles Dickens’s Little Dorrit (1857): in particular the moment when the protagonist and her family walk past a group of frozen travellers displayed in the crypt of the Great Saint Bernard monastery, in the Swiss Alps. The passing of the human in front of the nonhuman recalls the transformation of the human into the nonhuman, in the in-between space of the mountain pass. The first part of the analysis looks at the historical reality of the strange exhibition described by Dickens, along with its precedents in the travel literature of the time. The second part deals with the description as it appears in the author’s correspondence; and the third examines its discreet but important role in the novel’s structure.
