Summary: | The study results from research works aimed at characterizing the academic production in the form of dissertations and theses in Sciences, which was verified to be lacunal. In order to understand what the problem was, the investigation we conducted analyzed 130 research works being developed in national postgraduate programs between 1972 and 2000. The data showed the extension and intensity of production in the area throughout three decades of history. We noticed a meaningful growth of the area in the 90’s, mainly in the period between 1997 and 2000, when one third part of the production was developed. We argued that these data constitute important indicative of the consolidation of a national community of researchers, as well as group and research lines in Biology teaching.
