description When Charles de La Fosse was in London during the 1690s he worked for Lord Montagu on the decoration of his home in the Bloomsbury district, Montagu House. He collaborated with two other artists, Jacques Rousseau and Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer. Recent research on Jacques Rousseau, a painter in Versailles, Marly and in Parisian mansions, has shown the importance of this artist who was particularly active and present in Montagu House. Without minimizing the role of Charles de La Fosse, this article focuses on the history of his collaboration with Jacques Rousseau. He had a successful career in France before his arrival in London, where he most likely met Charles de La Fosse during various decoration campaigns. Studying Montagu House’s vanished decors permits us to review the roles of both artists during the mansion’s decoration.
