Summary: | This is an essay in two parts. In the first one I discuss the epistemological problem of defining Latin American music solely from differences articulated from an explicit exoticism, as well as its "mestizo" character, and the historiographical and musicological difficulties of such a definition. The second one departs from that debate to discuss certain examples of ways in which the music written in the nineteenth century in Latin America can stablish a dialogue with the "histories of music" that goes beyond the search for its differentiating exoticism. As a final issue, I will argue that looking at "music history" from Latin America gives us a distinctly less secularist perspective of it. |
