| description | In the present article, we intend to analyze the representations of national identities in the songs, images and performance of Carlos Gardel and Carmen Miranda. The hypothesis is that those artists were important in the process of negotiation and construction of the Argentinean and Brazilian national identities; concerning their performance as interpreters in their countries, and the advertising over their works which were purchased by a large number of consumers in the context of emerging nationalism between the Wars. In addition, we look at the means of mass communication, and the way they represented their nation (despite the fact that they were born in France and Portugal, respectively). In their careers, they made international tours in which they presented themselves as representatives of Argentina and Brazil, participating in the process of struggles of representation in the construction and legitimation of representations of these two countries. |
