Description
Summary:The recording of military violence was a routine administrative practice in the States of Savoy-Piedmont. The Chambre des Comptes recorded instances of military violence in order to excuse communities affected by tax levies. The reports range between narrative accounts and lists of atrocities. They had no set form—that depended on the habits and administrative backgrounds of their authors. The administrative processes underlying this practice influenced the manner of reporting on violence and the objects of violence, thus helping to build a discourse and a picture of military misdeeds.
