description Landed property in Bolivia has always been a complex and much debated topic. However certain regions, for example the La Paz antiplano, have received much more scholarly attention, whereas other areas have been largely ignored. This article will examine one such area: the southern part of Bolivia that boarders on Argentina. The article will first examine the break-up of indigenous communal property, re-evaluating some of the arguments that attribute the expansion of minifundio and the colonato to the privatisation of indigenous communities. The article then goes on to compare the property relations in the Province of Potosí (South Chichas), where communal land was expropriated, to the lands adjacent to Tarija (Provinces of Arce and Avilés), where there was no indigenous communal property.
