Description
Summary:Par les champs et par les grèves is the co-written account of the trip to Brittany undertaken by Gustave Flaubert and Maxime Du Camp in 1847. In the even-numbered chapters, Maxime Du Camp dares to evoke his amorous encounters in an explicit style that might have shocked his readership. The evolution of his desire can be analysed as an image of the journey itself: from its birth to its disappearance, via its apogee, with the prospect of renewal. These choices show that Du Camp was seeking to establish his status as a future travel writer. They also demonstrate the influence of Chateaubriand’s poetics of viatic narrative, as analysed by Jean-Claude Berchet. Finally, this focused study shows that Du Camp’s text had a significant impact on the work of Gustave Flaubert.
