The evolution of his desire can be analysed as an image of the journey itself: from its birth to its disappearance, via its apogee, with the prospect of renewal. These choices show that Du Camp was seeking to establish his status as a future travel writer. They also demonstrate the influence of Chateaubriand’s poetics of viatic narrative, as analysed by Jean-Claude Berchet. Finally, this focused study shows that Du Camp’s text had a significant impact on the work of Gustave Flaubert. |
