description | This article looks at the encomiastic dimension of the cancionero manuscript XVII. 30 from the Naples Biblioteca Nazionale, which pays homage to Antonio Álvarez de Toledo, fifth duke of Alba, viceroy of Naples from December 1622 to August 1629. The cancionero is a collection of poems divided into three well-defined sections. Its original nucleus was composed by Neapolitan poet Giambattista Basile, exclusively using Spanish forms such as décimas, glosas, redondillas, romances, seguidillas or villancicos. Spanish and Italian texts constitute the second section, collected for (or probably by) Adriana Basile, Giambattista’s sister, and her daughter Leonora Barone, both famed singers. In the third section Italian texts predominate, and they are mostly dedicated to the two singers. Through the analysis of the Spanish poetic forms and a few textual examples, this article retraces the presence of the viceroy inside the cancionero, showing which strategies were used to seek viceregal favour and how power is affirmed. In this atypical anthology in laudem, the constants of traditional love lyric and the centrality of musical aspects outline the figure of the dedicatee, a patron and lover of courtly entertainment, to whom the Basiles pay homage resorting to the canto a la spagnola. |
