description Dealing with the theme of the body of Christ, in the Christos Paschôn drama, takes us straight to the essential, regarding literary composition as well as dogmatic teaching, in this Euripidean cento ascribed to Gregory of Nazianze. Christ’s body, suffering then dead, is proposed through his mother’s grief to the reader / listener to meditate upon, as exemplifying suffering humanity, which can be described using the very words of Euripides. But this body, marked by pain and death, which show Incarnation as a reality, is also virtually the glorious body which will be revealed to the disciples, after they have passed through the night of absence and doubt. While linking together the humanity of Christ and of all tragic heroes and therefore claiming the continuity between pagan and christian Greek culture, the author attacks the Arian heresy, which denied the equality of the Father and the Son, and the Apollinarian heresy, which denied the fullness of humanity in Christ. On the contrary, he affirms that Christ is fully man and god.
