Description
Summary:The commemorations of the Rio de la Plata patriotic bicentennials at the beginning of the second decade of the 21st century inaugurated a stage of celebrations around the independence processes in the American South Cone. Argentina and Uruguay celebrated these anniversaries in 2010 and 2011, respectively, with large-scale public events, which have not been repeated in other national bicentennials. We analyze, in a comparative key, the ways in which indigenous and Afro groups, marginalized in the national foundational narratives, were spatially inscribed in official celebrations, understanding that these commemorative junctures reproduce certain meanings, but can also contribute to contesting them.
