Description
Summary:The paper is devoted to the important linguistic problem – the search of criteria to differentiate between homonymic morphemes. This problem is associated with the need to reveal the features of the evaluative suffix -ушк- (-ushk-) as one of the striking means of expression of the category of subjective evaluation in the Russian language, as well as to substantiate its differentiation from similar elements of the system – homonymic suffixes. The functional nature of morphemes, which was disclosed by Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, calls for using functional methods to analyze them, but there are currently no universally accepted methods to describe the functions of word-building affixes. The existing investigations in the field of word building and morphemics have been analyzed from the perspective of the functional approach; the hierarchy of functions performed by word-building morphemes has been created; among the functions, those being system- and language-relevant, thereby being important for differentiation between homonymic morphemes, have been identified. On the basis of the obtained results, an approach to the complex functional analysis of affixes aimed at determining their system-relevant properties has been developed. The use of this algorithm has shown that the Russian language is characterized by five functionally independent suffixal homonyms of -ушк-. A particular emphasis has been put on the differentiation between two homonymic suffixes with the subjectively evaluative semantics. The most important prospect of using the functional analysis in morphemics is development of the system functional catalogue of word-building affixes of the Russian language.
