Description
Summary:The military aspects of the religious conflict in Mexico have rarely attracted the interest of parties beyond the bounds of the nation, be they diplomats, journalists or members of religious, political or associative groups. This paper analyses reporting of the issue published by the British Foreign Office, the Jesuit periodical La Civiltà Cattolica and the opinion campaign organized by Belgian Catholic associations, pointing out the different viewpoints used to deal with the question. While British diplomats evince a certain objectivity in the opinions they express, albeit moving off from what are at times favourable positions vis à vis one of the parties involved, the Belgian campaign and the Jesuit periodical report the facts in an apologetic manner which does not always grasp the complexity of the war events.
