description Based on a survey conducted among 160 students of 1-4 courses of the Saratov State University of Genetics, Biotechnology and Engineering named after N.I. Vavilov, the main motives for physical education classes at the university are revealed. Differences in the structure of motivation in girls and boys were recorded. Girls prefer independent fitness classes, considering them to be more fashionable types of physical culture, while they attend university classes worse than boys. The determining role in physical education classes at the university is played by the desire of female students to “get a credit”, “communicate with peers”, “correct the figure and lose weight”. Most young men prefer “more athletic, individual sports” to studies at the university, while the leading motives are “building muscle mass” and “improving the figure”. In general, students do not consider physical education classes at the university as an effective means of improving health. It was also revealed that the vast majority of students do not approve of the means of physical training used in the classroom, defining them as “not up to modern standards»”, “not fashionable”, “not effective”, “not interesting”.
