Summary:Approximately one-third of the K-12 student population attends school in areas identified as rural/small town. Rural schools offer counselors unique opportunities to lead by guiding students’ education in directions that best fit their career aspirations, thus impacting the region educationally, economically and socially. The purpose of this paper is to identify the leadership role of school counselors in rural communities as identified by the American School Counselors Association (ASCA). Numerous challenges and opportunities inherent rural settings have been identified and suggestions offered as to ways in which counselors can effectively undertake leadership roles.
