Seroprevalence of Hepatitis Delta Infection: Retrospective-Based Seroepidemiologic Assessment

Introduction: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is an important viral agent that causes co-infection or superinfection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). In this study we evaluated anti-HDV positivity in 6707 acute, chronic and asymptomatic cases between January 2005 and July 2010. Materials and Methods: HBV a...

description Introduction: Hepatitis delta virus (HDV) is an important viral agent that causes co-infection or superinfection with hepatitis B virus (HBV). In this study we evaluated anti-HDV positivity in 6707 acute, chronic and asymptomatic cases between January 2005 and July 2010. Materials and Methods: HBV and HDV tests were performed with different commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. Results: We determined anti-HDV positivity in 308 (4.5%) of 6707 HBsAg positive, 3.2% of 28 acute HBV, 4.4% of 4320 chronic HBV, and 5.1% of 2359 asymptomatic patients. Anti-HDV rates showed no distinctive percentage distribution among gender and age groups. Conclusion: Anti-HDV rates in HBsAg-positive patients in Istanbul were determined to be lower than the moderate endemicity areas rates predicted for Turkey.
