Summary: | This article presents a descriptive analysis of drummer Nenê's performance on Egberto Gismonti's “Maracatu” phonogram on the 1981 album Sanfona. His interpretation of Maracatu on this track illustrates how certain Brazilian rhythms can be creatively adapted and performed on the drum set. Based on the theoretical concepts on musical performance present in the work of Ingrid Monson (1996) and Nicholas Cook (2013), I intend to shed light on the inventive interpretation of this popular Brazilian rhythm on drums in the context of Brazilian jazz. |
