Description
Summary:New editions of the two main French monolingual dictionaries, Petit Larousse and Petit Robert, are published each year. This article aims to study the lexicographic update mechanism. We have built a database of lexicographic change types occurring in thirty-two dictionaries covering the period 1997–2012. First, we examine in detail how lexicographers update dictionaries. Second, we illustrate each type of lexicographic change with numerous examples. Finally, we discuss a special type of text evolution: the comings and goings (variations) in the nomenclature of articles and in spelling choices employed in the Petit Larousse.
