description | Abstract Substance abuse and substance dependence are commonly seen in patients, and are frequently co-morbid with other medical and psychiatric disorders. Considerable societal stigma exists toward patients with substance use disorders; health care providers frequently have negative attitudes toward these patients, as well. Fortunately, there are communication skills that will facilitate the establishment of therapeutic relationships and motivate patients for treatment. This media-rich, online module was created through the collaborative efforts of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Drexel University College of Medicine, and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine as part of NIDA's Centers of Excellence for Physician Information. This 1- to 2-hour module includes a small-group discussion where learners share and reflect on experiences with patients who have had problems with either substance use or abuse. Question prompts and sample videos are provided to assist with the facilitation of this discussion. A series of role-plays are then acted out which focus on screening and interventions. A facilitator's guide and content manual are provided. |
