description After having seen how the “communist” regime was installed in Hungary and briefly following the uprising of 1956, we examine the beginning of the liberalization process produced within the system with the aim of analyzing the changes which took place immediately afterwards, of how “real socialism” disintegrates in a gradual and peaceful way and how liberal democracy and the market economy is put into practice. This article is a study of transition and, starting from a review of transition theories in political science, attempts to describe and explain the Hungarian transitional process of 1988-1990 situating the events in the theoretical framework drawn up by political science. Special attention is paid to the medium-range theories of Maravall, Morlino, Dahl, Rokkan, Schmitter and Lehmbruch and Rustow. Equal attention is paid to the study of the collective actors present in the Hungarian process of transition. Moreover, an attempt is made to understand the causes behind the sinking of the “communist” regime and the transition towards liberal democracy and the market economy. This leads us to consider the economic aspects although an attempt is made to include in these reflections elements which go beyond purely economic ones.
