description | The article analyzes the issue of representative democracy under the dominance of neoliberalism, which radically transforms the idea of the political life of society. Heuristically significant are the concepts considering neoliberal democracy in terms of setting a limit to the ideas about what is traditionally called "power of the people": "the betrayal of democracy" (Christopher Lasch), "the end of liberal democracy" (Wendy Brown), "post-democracy" (Colin Crouch), "the hollowing of Western democracy" (Peter Mair), and "the limits of liberal democracy" (Slavoj Žižek). According to the research method of philosophical hermeneutics, setting a limit means identifying theories and concepts which bring back the debate on the political meaning of the concept of representative democracy in the context of the global "economization" ofsociety. The paradoxical nature of the system of democratic representation is considered through the mechanisms of political representation (FrankAnkersmit) and the logic of delegation (Pierre Bourdieu). The article shows the system crisis of democratic representation by the metaphor of Bartlebian politics demonstrating the dependence of the authorities on the votes of the electorate. Neoliberal democracy is regarded as a variant of non-political democracy. Deprivation of democracy of its political meaning suggests that the expansion of the democratic principle (representative democracy + elements of direct democracy) isinevitably accompanied by a reduction in the political powers of voters, which, in turn, reduces real opportunities for citizensto influence public policy ruled by elites, transnational corporations, and world financial markets. The study also arguesthat in the context of neoliberalism, e-government, media democracy, e-democracy and cyberdemocracy are ways of simulating the political meaning of democracy given the mass withdrawal of citizensfrom politics and a decrease in their political activity. |
